A very big landmark in downtown Fredericksburg by the railroad tracks is this building. It is an old Purina dog food plant and employed many people in the Fredericksburg area for many many years. They never took the building down and it has not been used for anything else. It just stands there reminding us of another time. Today Geico is the area's largest employer.

88/365 Slave Auction Block?

One of the most unusual things in my town is this auction block from pre-civil war days. This concrete block is just sitting on a random corner in downtown Fredericksburg. It is a stark reminder to any who pay attention to the dark history of our country. If you have ever read or watched the movie Roots, Kunta Kinte was sold in downtown Fredericksburg on an auction block just like this one here. It is very sad to think about and makes history so much more real.

86/365 Spotsylvania Battlefield

One of the biggest attractions of our area is the civil war battlefield. This was a very bloody battle. Men fought at the bloody angle in hand to hand combat. In some areas the bodies piled up 5 deep. Today this is where we run and you can feel something deep within as you run through there. Across the main road is the cemetery where over 700 soldiers are buried. It makes the civil war so real. An interesting fact, when I did a geneology on my husbands family a year ago, I discovered that one of his great great relatives from North Carolina fought at this exact battlefield. He went AWOL after this particular battle and rejoined a year later. In the time he was gone his wife had my husbands ancestor. Now we live right here. So funny what a small world we live in.

This week I am going to be focusing on places about my town. Since it is Sunday it is only fitting that I focus on my place of worship. This is where you will find me on most Sunday Mornings. This church is just a building, but the people within which make up the church are just fantastic. I look forward to seeing many of my friends there every week. The Holy Spirit moves among us and His presence is felt. I love my church, and hope that everyone knows they are welcome there.

83/365 Visiting the Nation's Capital

Tonight we went to Washington DC as a family to see the Cherry Blossoms. We had such a fantastic time... until we lost my son. He decided to get a drink of water and I thought he went ahead with my husband and girls. I mosey'd my way through the crowds and met up with everyone about an hour later only to discover that they thought he was with me!!! I contacted Park Police, We went back, retraced our steps, and was so happy to find him waiting in the spot where he left to get a drink. I felt like a really bad mom. I got some great photos though. This one is one of my favorites. I love how the monument is reflecting in the waves of the tidal basin.
